P5. CV, Personal Statement and UCAS Application

Personal Statement
Film is a great way for a person to release their imagination. I started studying media in secondary school when I was first introduced to it. I found out about cinematography, editing, sound and mis-en scene and how they manipulate the story that gets across to the spectator.
Media in school gave me an all-round knowledge into film and television which made me want to pursue this career. I then furthered my education and passion by applying to do a Film and Media Diploma at Long Road and I would like to build upon my skills by studying film further at university.

During the past few years of learning film I have started to get inspiration from directors such as Quentin Tarantino. I have studied his earlier work such as Reservoir Dogs (1992) and Pulp Fiction (1994) which helped me to see film in a different way, looking at how it can be used to send a message to a spectator whilst keeping them fully entertained. I have also gained knowledge by watching and analysing Martin Scorsese films such as the classic Taxi Driver (1976) and more of his recent work such as The Wolf Of Wall Street (2013) that broadened my knowledge and made me consider what kind of films I might want to make in the future.

In college I have built animations that showcased my drawing and creative skills to provide metaphorical meaning through objects that are not real. I created a documentary which is a more natural way of telling a story through film. I also gained knowledge by making a two minute opening sequence which included range of visual effects from flying people to glowing hands. This is where my knowledge for Adobe After Effects came in when I was able to utilise my techniques, which I gained in my free time. Additionally for my documentary I used Adobe Premiere to arrange and edit the whole short film and used Fruity Loops to create the sound score. This suited the story that the film is telling, and also created a greater impact on the spectator.

Outside college I do freelance graphic design and video editing. I have been able to get orders from small companies that may need promotional videos, which I make in Adobe After Effects and Cinema 4D or a poster for their event that I would make in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Through this I have been able to expand my skills by working independently and being able to produce high quality of work in a small amount of time.

Other than film I am interested in electronic music. From composing to listening I have been influenced heavily by people like Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin and Frankie Knuckles who have been key parts in the 80's and 90's dance scene. Firstly I adore their work because they experimented with music and have shaped new forms of music that changed the music world. I also listen to film scores whilst watching a film because they are a key element in controlling and directing spectators emotions which made me want to make film soundtracks. I noticed film soundtracks when I watched the film Inception (2012), which was scored by Oscar winning Hans Zimmer. I feel his ideas are very innovative and distinctive compared to other composers; this is why I feel he has inspired me to create film scores.

My main goal in life is to become a filmmaker. From directing and editing to making music scores I am interested in all of these areas. The work I do at college and home both relate to film. Therefore studying film as an undergraduate would allow me to express my enthusiasm for a brilliant art form that I want to pursue as a lifelong profession.

P4. Career Path Flow Diagram

For my career options I am going to study Film and Television at University of Hertfordshire. Whilst studying I will hopefully carry on my music career and make electronic music whilst running a record label to help myself financially.

Key Contacts
Rayshaun Thompson - Film Composer

After university I would try to get a job straight away as a film composer. I would try to work as an assistant if I can't get the main job role I want.

If I don't get into university I will work freelance for a year and build up my portfolio to boost my chances to get into university next year. I would use contacts I know like Menny Fasano who could offer me to do some freelance music work or graphics work. I could do this work in the UK or Italy depending on how much work I would have to do.

For becoming a Dj at Fez Club I would apply to become a member at Fez through there website
http://www.cambridgefez.com/join_the_team/

The skills I need to develop:
- Cinematography skills
- Communication skills
- Team work skills
- Live instrument skills

P6. Portfolio/Website

To show off my portfolio I created a website/blog at http://www.mankus.co.uk

The website contains:

- Work page
- About me page
- Showreel page

P3. Personal Resources Audit

From the research I understood that for my jobs I will need more equipment if I want to work more efficiently for example if I want to compose music scores for films I will need to buy a studio mixer which would cost around £1950. I could gain this money from working part time.

On the other hand for VFX I already have all the required equipment I would just need more contacts to get chances to work in the industry.

Certain contacts I can contact for jobs

  • Menny Fasano - A&R Job in Italy
  • Carlo Cavalli - Distribution contacts
  • Hannah Gautrey - Film contact
  • Sharmin Yousuf - Radio contact
  • Marijus Kalvietis - Film Critic
  • Peter Watson - Businessman (Freelance Work)
  • Jake Shep - Clothing management (Freelance Work)
  • Rayshaun Thompson - Film scorer
